Soccer, ball control

First touch

Cushion an incoming ball so it drops dead at your feet, ready for the next move.

Beta: we're less sure how well one camera can judge this move, so treat the scores as a rough guide.

Set up your camera

Phone at hip height, about 3 metres away, facing you. Keep the ball in the picture too.

Your whole body, head to feet, needs to be in the picture. The coach will remind you if it can't see you.

How to do it

  1. 1Watch the ball all the way as it comes to you.
  2. 2Move your feet so you are in line with the ball.
  3. 3Lift your foot to meet it, with your ankle relaxed.
  4. 4Pull your foot back a little as the ball arrives to cushion it.
  5. 5Let the ball stop about a step in front of you.

What the coach watches for

  • Cushion it

The ball bounced off your foot. Relax your ankle and pull your foot back as the ball arrives.

  • Keep it close

Your touch pushed the ball too far away. Kill it dead, about a step in front of you.
