Chip shot

Stab under the ball with little follow-through so it lifts over a keeper.

Set up your camera

Phone at hip height, about 3 metres away, filming you from the side. Keep the ball in the picture too.

Your whole body, head to feet, needs to be in the picture. The coach will remind you if it can't see you.

How to do it

  1. 1Plant your standing foot beside the ball.
  2. 2Swing your kicking leg back with your knee bent.
  3. 3Lean back a little as you kick.
  4. 4Stab your toe under the bottom of the ball.
  5. 5Stop your leg early so the ball lifts up and drops down.

What the coach watches for

  • Swing your leg back

Your backswing was short. Bend your knee and bring your kicking leg further back.

  • Lean over the ball

You leaned back as you struck it, which sends the ball high. Get your chest over the ball.

  • Short, stabbing kick

You followed through too much. Stab at the ball and stop your leg early.

  • Strike through the ball

The ball came off slowly. Lock your ankle and strike through the middle of it.

  • Get under the ball

The chip didn't lift. Stab under the bottom of the ball.
