Set up your camera

Phone at hip height, about 3 metres away, filming you from the side. Keep the ball in the picture too.

Your whole body, head to feet, needs to be in the picture. The coach will remind you if it can't see you.

How to do it

  1. 1Stand close to the hoop, feet shoulder-width apart, facing it.
  2. 2Hold the ball in one hand with your elbow under it.
  3. 3Bend your knees, then push up through your legs.
  4. 4Straighten your arm and snap your wrist to release the ball high.
  5. 5Hold the follow-through, fingers pointing at the rim.

What the coach watches for

  • Bend your knees

You shot with straight legs. Dip your knees and push up, because the power comes from your legs.

  • Straighten your arm

Your shooting arm didn't straighten. Reach up and finish with a straight elbow.

  • Release higher

The release was low. Shoot up and out, high above your forehead.

  • Hold the follow-through

You dropped your hand straight away. Hold your wrist up, fingers pointing at the rim, for a second.

  • Stay balanced

You fell backwards as you shot. Go straight up and land where you took off.

  • More arc

The ball came off flat. Push it up higher so it drops down into the hoop.
